Begin without a finished picture

Set out a small selection of age-appropriate toys and let your child take the lead. You do not need an elaborate invitation or a perfect playroom. A little space on the floor can be enough.

Ask a question, then make room

“What could this become?” leaves more room than showing exactly how to build a tower. Sometimes the most useful thing a grown-up can do is sit nearby and pay attention.

Let the story change

A rainbow might start as a bridge and end as six tiny beds. There is no need to steer the game back to its first idea. Changing direction is part of the fun.

Keep it comfortable

Choose toys using the verified manufacturer age guidance and warnings. Stay close during play and stop when your child is ready for something else. An unfinished castle can wait until tomorrow.
